Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 cups beef broth

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)

2 cups mashed potatoes (prepared, for topping)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Beef Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Shape the Patties: Form the beef mixture into thick patties, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

Brown the Patties: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the hamburger patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Don’t worry about cooking them through, as they will finish in the oven. Remove the patties and set them aside.

Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, whisk together the beef broth and cream of mushroom soup until smooth. Bring to a simmer.

Combine and Layer: In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, pour half of the beef and soup mixture into the bottom. Arrange the browned patties over the sauce, followed by a layer of frozen mixed vegetables. Pour the remaining beef and soup mixture over the patties and vegetables.

Top with Mashed Potatoes: Spoon the prepared mashed potatoes over the top of the entire dish, smoothing it out with a spatula.

Bake the Dish: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving. Enjoy your hearty Amish Hamburger Steak Bake!
