The origins of the German pancake can be traced back to the early 19th century in the United States, where it is believed to have been inspired by traditional German recipes. These pancakes are deeply rooted in European culinary traditions, where variations of baked batter dishes have been enjoyed for generations. As families migrated to America, they brought their beloved recipes with them, which evolved over time into the fluffy baked German pancake we know today.

Ingredients

6 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Fresh fruit (such as berries or sliced apples, for serving)

Maple syrup (for drizzling)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a 9x13 inch baking dish in the oven to heat as well.

Blend the Batter: In a blender, combine the eggs, milk, flour, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and melted butter. Blend until smooth and frothy, about 30-60 seconds.

Prepare the Baking Dish: Once the oven has preheated, carefully remove the hot baking dish and quickly pour in a little melted butter (if any is left over) to coat the bottom.

Pour the Batter: Immediately pour the pancake batter into the hot baking dish, ensuring it spreads evenly.

Bake: Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the pancake is puffed and golden around the edges. Do not open the oven door during the first 20 minutes of baking.

Serve: Remove from the oven and dust generously with powdered sugar. Cut into squares and serve warm with fresh fruit and maple syrup drizzled on top.

Enjoy: Enjoy your delicious, fluffy baked German pancake straight from the oven!
